Lucknow: Police in Rae Bareli district have registered an FIR against an Uzbek national

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Lucknow: Police in Rae Bareli district have registered an FIR against an Uzbek national for allegedly staying in India after the expiry of her tourist visa, officials said on Friday.

The woman has been identified as Madina Khon Nishonova, a resident of Margilan in Uzbekistan’s Fergana region. She was taken into custody for questioning after police claimed she was found residing in the country without valid documents authorising her continued stay.

Nishonova entered India on an e-tourist visa that was valid from Oct 24, 2024, to Oct 23, 2025, according to the complaint. During the inquiry, officers found that her visa had expired in Oct 2025, police said. Salon circle officer Yaduvendra Bahadur Pal confirmed the FIR was registered under Section 23(a) of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, which covers visa overstays and other violations related to the stay of foreign nationals in India.

Police said Nishonova had been staying in Delhi and arrived in Salon about two days before the matter came to light, reportedly to meet someone. Her current address was listed as Vasant Kunj, New Delhi, according to the FIR. Police said her immigration records and travel history are being verified and further action will follow based on the findings. Officials said the allegations in the FIR are part of an ongoing investigation and do not establish guilt.

The FIR was lodged at Salon police station on the complaint of sub-inspector Archit Agrawal. During verification, she allegedly failed to produce any document permitting her to remain in India beyond the visa validity period. Local residents alerted the police after noticing the presence of a foreign national in the area, following which officers reached the location and began inquiries. Acting on the information, police questioned her and examined her travel documents. She was subsequently detained for questioning and a formal complaint was filed. Investigators are examining the circumstances of her stay and verifying whether she had applied for or obtained any extension, permission or other legal authorisation after the visa expired.
