Gang held in Nellai for harassing, robbing girl, boy
Police subsequently nabbed Suresh , 27, a resident of Tirunellveli Town, and his accomplices — two boys aged 17 and 14. Police said the 14-year-old minor had earlier been arrested by Suthamalli police in an attempt-to-murder case and lodged in an observation home. The gang threatened the pair that they would circulate the photographs if the incident was reported to the police or family members, added the official.
A senior police official told TOI that the incident occurred in the early hours of the day when the class XII girl was with her friend. Acting on the input, police traced the victim’s family and persuaded them to lodge a complaint as they were initially afraid to approach the police,” said the official. A gang of three boys threatened and assaulted the pair before relieving the girl of the gold jewellery and mobile phone. The boy was forced to remove his shirt and pose for photographs with the girl. “We received information about the incident through sources. Acting on instruction from Tirunelveli city police commissioner Deshmukh Shekar Sanjay, the case was registered by Tirunelveli Town AWPS under relevant sections of Pocso Act , and action initiated. They confessed to the crime. Subsequently, police recovered the stolen jewellery and the mobile phone. A medical examination ruled out any sexual assault in the incident, and further investigation is under way.
