The complainant received a call from an unknown cellphone number on Sept 25, an officer from Chatushrungi police said, adding that the caller introduced himself as a police officer. The elderly man lodged a complaint with Chatushrungi police on Thursday.

The caller claimed that a money laundering case had been registered against the elderly man and then threatened that the complainant could be arrested and instructed him not to contact any family members or friends, the officer said. “He then asked the complainant to transfer the money to a bank account for verification and assured him that the amount would be returned,” the officer said. “We have sought the account details from the bank,” the officer said.

Under the pretext of an inquiry, the caller sought details of the complainant’s bank balance and other investments. When the money was not returned, the senior citizen tried to contact the caller, but in vain. Download the TOI App.
