Hyderabad: An 18-year-old BTech first-year student allegedly drowned in a water body at an abandoned quarry in Malkaram near Jawahar Nagar on Friday evening. The incident occurred when 12 students of an engineering college reached the water body to click photographs. Later, Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams later retrieved the body after a 10-minute search operation.
He was among a group of 12 students, including three girls, who visited the abandoned quarry after watching reels of it on Instagram and considered it an ideal location for clicking photographs. Two HYDRAA DRF teams reached the spot and launched search operations.
Two students entered the water body and sat on a rock to take photographs, according to HYDRAA officials. Later, one of them said he would go towards another rock and return. The deceased, Pawan Sai, was a student of Geethanjali Engineering College. However, while returning, Pawan Sai drowned as he did not know how to swim. As it was sundown, darkness soon enveloped the area.
The DRF control room received information about the incident on Friday evening and alerted nearby teams.
Also, the rescue operation was challenging, as the teams had to take a boat into the quarry pit from a height of nearly 300 metres. The teams retrieved the body in about 10 minutes.
