Nashik : The state pollution control board has issued closure notices to nine industrial units in Nashik’s Ambad industrial belt after finding serious violations linked to suspected groundwater contamination in Dattanagar, where residents have complained of polluted borewell water. The action came after a joint inspection by Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) and district administration following directions from guardian minister Girish Mahajan, environment minister Pankaja Munde and mayor Himgauri Aher. Power and water connections to the units are being disconnected. Three more units have been issued notices for procedural violations. Preliminary inquiries found that some factories allegedly bypassed mandatory effluent treatment systems and discharged untreated industrial waste into wells or underground aquifers, contaminating the groundwater table. Authorities are now trying to identify specific electroplating and heavy-metal processing units suspected to be behind the chemical discharge. “We have taken water samples from the borewells and the reports are awaited.
