The association said differences in medicine prices could stem from factors like market competition, bulk procurement, discounts, batch variations and remaining shelf life. IMA said the statutory role of registered pharmacists must be respected while ensuring that unauthorised medical practice is effectively curbed. It added that price alone cannot be used to judge a drug’s quality or authenticity. IMA secretary Dr Shweta Srivastava urged authorities to strengthen quality surveillance through regular sample testing, batch verification and supply chain monitoring to identify counterfeit, substandard and expired medicines, as well as drugs stored under improper conditions. The association also called for action against unauthorised diagnosis and treatment by medical store operators and the sale of prescription medicines without valid prescriptions where mandated.
