The first operational stretch of Chennai Metro Rail Phase-2 connects Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani. The 15km elevated corridor, part of Corridor-4, has 11 stations and was built at a cost of Rs 4,900 crore.

Commuters can interchange with Phase-1 services at Vadapalani, making the stretch an important link between the new corridor and the existing Metro network. The new corridor connects Chennai’s western suburbs to the existing Metro network at Vadapalani.

The 15km stretch includes 11 stations: Poonamallee Bypass, Poonamallee Bus Stand, Poonamallee Government Hospital, Karayanchavadi, Kumananchavadi, Kattupakkam, Ayyappanthangal, Thelliyagaram, Porur Bypass, Porur Junction and Vadapalani. From Monday to Saturday, trains on the new stretch will operate every 10 minutes during peak hours, between 8am and 11am and 5pm and 8pm. During non-peak hours, services will run every 15 minutes. On Sundays and public holidays, trains on the new Chennai Metro stretch will operate every 15 minutes throughout the day. The service schedule differs from weekdays, when trains run every 10 minutes during the morning and evening peak hours. The newly operational stretch is the first part of Chennai Metro Phase-2, a 118.9km network being developed across three corridors. The 15km elevated Chennai Metro Phase-2 stretch has been developed at a cost of Rs 4,900 crore. Part of Corridor-4, it features 11 stations and connects Poonamallee Bypass with Vadapalani, where commuters can interchange with Phase-1 services. The 3.7km double-decker section between Porur Junction and Vadapalani will not open immediately. Six stations along this stretch are yet to become operational, while the first operational section of Phase-2 connects Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani.
The full project is expected to significantly expand Metro connectivity across Chennai, extending the reach of the city’s existing Metro network.
