Nashik: Police in Jalgaon ’s Parola taluka have arrested two women accused of carrying out a sham marriage, poisoning members of a family and fleeing just two days after the wedding.

An agent had brought Suman from Jharkhand to Parola and arranged her marriage with Valmik Patil (32), a resident of Welhane village, for Rs 2.5 lakh, according to police. Police said the real plan unfolded on Oct 9. Police said the two women hired a vehicle around 4 am and fled the village. Police have registered a case under sections 109(1) (attempt to murder), 123 (causing hurt by means of poison), 316(2) (criminal breach of trust) and other relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

“The moment we received information, we launched a search operation.

After tracking their location, we intercepted both women in Nimgul village in Dhule district,” said inspector Deepak Patil of the Parola police station. Arti, who is from Chhattisgarh, accompanied Suman. Suman and Arti allegedly mixed poison into the family’s dinner. Valmik, his father and his mother consumed the food and started feeling unwell soon afterwards. They, however, went to bed thinking they would feel better in the morning. The groom’s elder brother ate only a small portion of the food, though his wife and children did not eat any of it. Valmik’s elder brother later went out for his evening walk, but his friends sent him back home when they noticed him losing his balance while walking. As the family battled the effects of the suspected poisoning, the accused allegedly made their move. Police suspect the marriage itself was a carefully planned trap.

All are now reported to be stable. The family’s ordeal came to light the next morning when the three family members had to be admitted to the Jalgaon Civil Hospital.
