SIR row: Keralam assembly passes resolution seeking removal of CEC Gyanesh Kumar, flags threat

The Keralam Legislative Assembly passed a resolution requesting the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar

After the resolution was passed, Satheesan said the right to vote was fundamental to democracy and that no institution could be allowed to undermine citizens’ constitutional rights. The resolution, moved by chief minister V D Satheesan, called for addressing alleged irregularities in the voter roll revision exercise and restoring the voting rights of all eligible voters who had been wrongfully excluded. It is believed to be the first such resolution in the country. The House also sought a change in the composition of the committee that selects election commissioners, proposing that the Prime Minister, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha and the Chief Justice of India be included to safeguard the Election Commission’s independence and credibility.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Keralam legislative assembly on Monday passed a resolution seeking the removal of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, citing concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the exclusion of eligible voters and the Election Commission’s impartiality.
