NAGPUR: The 109-year-old Bodalkasa dam in Tirora taluka of Gondia district breached on Monday morning, but authorities claimed that no village or farmland had been submerged. The reservoir of the medium irrigation project, with a capacity of 15.30 million cubic metres, was 95% full before the breach and is expected to lose nearly two-thirds of its water over the next two to four days, after which repairs can begin. Dongre said, “Seepage started at 6.30 am. Collector Mandar Patki said all 14 villages downstream of the dam had been alerted. He said, “If water enters a village, inform the district control room immediately on 07182-230196 or 9881064449.

Chandrakant Dongre, sub-divisional engineer with the irrigation department, told TOI that seepage began near the head regulator, which had been opened to supply water to farmers. District disaster management officer Rajan Chaube said water was flowing from the canal into a nala and then into the river, away from villages and farmland. He said, “The dam is not very big, and villages will not be submerged.

It instantly took a big form, and the whole section was breached. There is no loss of life or property.”
