3 siblings crack constable exam, join Bengal police — From fields to force

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Jalpaiguri: For Abinash, Kamalesh and Pampa Roy, three siblings from a peasant family in Uttar Madhabdanga village in Maynaguri block, cracking the West Bengal Police constable recruitment examination was more than just a personal achievement. It was a dream they had nurtured for years — a chance to lift their family out of poverty and repay their parents for a lifetime of sacrifices.

When the results were announced recently, the family could hardly believe its good fortune.

We are grateful and happy that we did not disappoint them”, said Pampa. Their journey has been shaped by the hardships they witnessed at home. Their father, Jiten Roy, worked from dawn to dusk to make ends meet, even mortgaging his farmland at one point to ensure his children could continue their education. Their mother, Bhagabati, stood by him, working in the fields while shouldering the responsibilities of the household, never once complaining. The siblings also credited the free coaching provided by Maynaguri Police Station for helping them prepare for the examination. “The free coaching given to us by the Maynaruri PS really helped us.

When the three appeared for the written examination in Dec last year, little did they imagine that they would all make it through. On Monday, their dream came full circle as all three joined the Bengal Police at the Jalpaiguri Police Lines.

“We knew that we could lift our family from poverty only if we secured a govt job. So, we tried very hard. We are happy that we finally made it through,” Kamalesh added. For the Roy family, Monday marked the beginning of a new chapter — one in which years of hardship and sacrifice have finally given way to hope, security and the promise of a better future.
