The new six-lane bridge over Ganga is almost complete

Prayagraj : Motorists entering Prayagraj via the upcoming 9.9-km Malak Harhar six-lane bridge will not have to stop at the toll plaza, with the Union ministry of road transport and highways approving a multi-lane free flow (MLFF) tolling system for the project. The toll plaza was originally planned with 14 lanes, seven in each direction. Testing of the remaining sections is scheduled between Oct 15 and Oct 30, while the 860-metre extradosed span over Ganga will undergo load testing from Nov 15.

Officials said the command centre is being developed alongside the bridge’s finishing works, including beautification and the laying of the final two bitumen layers. The move will enable seamless toll collection through FASTag-linked technology, eliminating barriers and reducing congestion at the city entry point. Local authorities had sent a proposal to the ministry around a fortnight ago seeking approval for a barrier-free tolling system. With the nod now in place, high-resolution CCTV cameras integrated with a command centre will automatically read FASTag details and process toll payments as vehicles pass through the plaza without stopping. The design was later revised to six toll lanes, while the remaining space is proposed to be developed into passenger amenities, including a selfie point and a food court. Meanwhile, load testing of the bridge is being carried out in phases ahead of its commissioning. Once operational, it will monitor traffic movement across the entire stretch between Malak Harhar and Kalash Crossing on Stanley Road. The bridge is expected to significantly ease access to Prayagraj by ensuring uninterrupted traffic flow and faster entry into the city. Download the TOI App.
