Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta has proposed installing 50,000 CCTV cameras across the city for improved security

NEW DELHI: Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday outlined plans to install 50,000 new CCTV cameras across the city and introduce smart street lighting connected to an Integrated Command and Control System, during an interaction with elected student representatives from Delhi University colleges.

Gupta said the proposed CCTV cameras would be backed by Annual Maintenance Contracts (AMC) to ensure regular maintenance and upkeep. The planned smart street lighting system will enable automatic fault detection, with contractors responsible for repairs under AMCs. The measures come amid concerns raised by Delhi University student representatives over women’s safety and security on and around campuses, including issues related to inadequate street lighting and CCTV surveillance.

During an earlier interaction with DU student representatives, Gupta had directed officials to increase street lighting and CCTV coverage on the university’s North Campus.

The safety concerns have also come into focus following an incident in which three men posing as police personnel allegedly threatened a 17-year-old boy during his birthday outing, with the accused reportedly carrying firearms and a knife.
