Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Wednesday rejected the anticipatory bail plea of actor Soham Chakraborty in a Balurghat police station case where he was accused of taking Rs 15 lakh deceitfully for a film; it was held that “case diary suggested requirement of investigations.”

Chakraborty had approached the single bench of Justice Debangsu Basak anticipating an arrest in the May 21 case. A businessman, Tarun Das, alleged that he paid Rs 15 lakh by cheque to Chakraborty on Oct 8, 2018, for a film. It was claimed that suddenly on May 16, Das called him and demanded the amount. It was also alleged that Das and two others also barged into Chakraborty’s chamber on May 19 at Purna Chandra Mitra Lane. On May 20, the purported film director — Mahua Chakraborty — lodged a complaint.

“Considering the gravity of the offence, materials in the case diary and the involvement of the petitioner therein, I am not minded to grant anticipatory bail to the petitioner,” Justice Basak held. Chakraborty allegedly never made the film nor did he return the amount. On the other hand, Chakraborty alleged that he and his team repeatedly followed up with the director and the producer on the commencement of the project, but they didn’t start despite repeated assurances. Justice Basak, however, held that Chakraborty took money ostensibly to act in a film, but did not act nor did he return the money. Download the TOI App.
