Built at a cost of thousands of crores, the 4,000 MW YTPS comprises five units of 800 MW each. Sources said the plant requires around 14 million tonnes of G-9 grade coal annually, but such coal is not available in Telangana’s mines except from SCCL’s Naini mine in Odisha. The supply of lower-grade coal such as G-13, G-14 and occasionally G-18 by SCCL has significantly impacted power generation at the plant, according to Genco officials.

However, the plant has present capacity is 3,200 MW and has been been generating only around 1,500-2,000 MW daily, largely due to coal supply and operational issues, according to official sources. As a result, the plant has been using a mix of G-9 and lower-grade coal for generation. Hyderabad : A day after chief minister A Revanth Reddy pulled up power officials over outages and poor generation at the Yadadri thermal power station (YTPS), Telangana Genco on Thursday suspended a chief engineer and deployed five senior officers to camp at the plant and monitor its performance until the end of the month. The action followed the chief minister’s review of the state’s power situation on Wednesday, during which he expressed strong displeasure over the plant’s performance and warned that he would not hesitate to suspend even senior officials if the situation persisted.
