Four workers killed in blast at Chhatral chemical unit — Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad : Four workers were killed in an explosion at a chemical manufacturing unit in Chhatral GIDC of Gandhinagar district on Thursday afternoon after a pressure vessel at the plant reportedly developed excessive pressure.

Kalol taluka police inspector J J Gadhvi said a mechanical failure in the reduction vessel was suspected to have led to the accident. The blast triggered panic within the factory and the surrounding industrial area. Police, fire brigade teams and senior officials rushed to the spot after being alerted. Police are probing the circumstances that led to the pressure build-up and subsequent explosion. Investigators will also examine the plant’s operating conditions and compliance with safety norms.

Kalol taluka police, revenue authorities and a forensic science laboratory (FSL) team launched an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion and examine safety measures at the unit.

The company possessed the required fire no-objection certificate and other statutory clearances, according to preliminary information. However, officials said all safety-related aspects are being scrutinised as part of the investigation.
