Google has announced a major expansion of its Android Earthquake Alerts System, extending the feature from 98 countries and regions to more than 200 while introducing additional information in earthquake warnings to help users respond more effectively during emergencies. The company also added that the system has managed to deliver more than one billion earthquake alerts since its launch in 2021, making it what Google describes as the world’s largest mobile-based earthquake detection network. The expanded coverage will bring alerts to more locations including Panama and Guatemala, among others.
In a post on X, Pichai noted that the system has sent over one billion alerts since 2021 and is now expanding from 98 to nearly 200 countries and regions. “Since launching in 2021, our Android Earthquake Alerts System has sent 1B+ alerts. Now we’re expanding the system from 98 to nearly 200 countries and regions.
The announcement was highlighted by Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who said the technology has already aided people during critical moments.
He also pointed to this year’s earthquakes in Venezuela, saying millions of people outside the epicentre received alerts and were able to take cover before the shaking began.
Alongside the geographic expansion, Google is enhancing its “Be Ready” earthquake alert with more contextual information. In the coming months, users will see a map showing the radius of detected shaking, the estimated earthquake magnitude, recommended actions, and a button to access more information as details become available.
The “Be Aware” alert is designed for estimated light shaking, while “Be Ready” provides advance notice of stronger shaking and encourages users to prepare. The highest-level “Take Action” alert appears full-screen and offers immediate safety guidance for moderate to heavy shaking. Google said even a few seconds of advance notice can be crucial during an earthquake, giving people time to take cover and protect themselves.
Android users in supported regions may receive one of three alert types depending on the expected intensity of shaking. The Android Earthquake Alerts System uses mobile devices to help detect seismic activity and deliver warnings before strong shaking reaches users.
