NEW DELHI: Security forces have seized drugs worth Rs 24 crore from Khowai and Dhalia districts of Tripura, officials said on Friday. A combined operation by Assam Rifles and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence on Thursday led to the seizure of 90,000 Yaba tablets (methamphetamine) valued at Rs 9 crore from a cement-laden truck in Teliamura, Khowai district. In a separate incident on Wednesday, Assam Rifles and Customs officials discovered 1,50,000 Yaba tablets, estimated at Rs 15 crore, in two abandoned bags aboard the Shatabdi Express in Dhalai district. One person was arrested in connection with the Khowai drug seizure, officials confirmed.
These narcotics make their way into Tripura from Myanmar via Manipur and Mizoram, according to police reports. Yaba, also known as ‘crazy medicine’, consists of methamphetamine (a potent and habit-forming stimulant) combined with caffeine in tablet form. Police say Yaba tablets enter Tripura from Myanmar via Manipur and Mizoram before being distributed.
The authorities apprehended one individual in relation to this case.
