Ahmedabad: A doctor was arrested after a 25-year-old IIM-Ahmedabad student accused him of molesting her during medical examinations on two consecutive days. The student was admitted to a hospital in Memnagar for treatment of a stomach ulcer.
The student had been admitted to a room at the hospital on Oct 1, according to the FIR filed on Oct 4. Around 8pm on Oct 1, the doctor allegedly examined her breasts without her consent and without wearing gloves. The following day, around 6.30pm, the doctor allegedly took her into the same room for an abdominal examination after seeking her permission. Police arrested the doctor around 7pm on Oct 4 and produced him in a court, which remanded him in judicial custody.
The student told police that no female medical staff member was present during the examination. Police said the doctor had been practising at the hospital for around two years. Police officers said that they have begun investigating the circumstances under which the examinations were conducted and whether standard medical protocols were followed.
The FIR states that he then shut the door from inside and allegedly lowered her innerwear twice while examining her. He allegedly inserted a finger into her private parts without wearing gloves. The student resisted the assault, left the room, and informed her family members about the doctor’s behaviour. They are also examining whether other hospital staff were present in the vicinity when the alleged assaults occurred.
Vastrapur police filed an FIR against the doctor for sexual assault and arrested him on Sunday evening.
