Ahmedabad: A florist from Vasna lost Rs 5 lakh after tapping on a fake traffic challan message sent by fraudsters who allegedly swiped Rs 5 lakh off his credit card. The WhatsApp message contained an attachment to download the alleged malware. It was followed by a payment link.
In his complaint with Ahmedabad Cybercrime police, the 45-year-old, who runs a flower shop near Vasna bus stand, stated he has been using a credit card for around 10 years. The florist told police that on Sept 21, he checked his bank application and noticed that transactions totalling nearly Rs 5 lakh had been carried out from his credit card without his knowledge. On Aug 22, he received a suspicious APK file named ‘NextGen mParivahan1.0(2).apk’ on WhatsApp from an unknown number. The message claimed there was a traffic violation against his vehicle and instructed him to download an application and pay a Rs 1,000 challan through a link. One transaction of Rs 4,49,118 was carried out on Aug 28 and four others totalling Rs 50,902 took place the next day.
