Ahmedabad: A 28-year-old Jain devotee from Ahmedabad is set to complete a 180-day fast on Sept 20 after surviving the prolonged penance on boiled water consumed only between sunrise and sunset. Religious programmes will begin on Sept 18 ahead of the ‘parna’. He has lost 17kg during the fast. Sheth said he never considered abandoning the fast during the six-month period. “I was confident that I could do it and had faith,” he said. He said his body gradually adapted to the prolonged fasting. I can walk with ease and do not need any support,” he said. He said he has begun experiencing weakness as the penance nears its end. Sheth had earlier undertaken fasts lasting nine, 30, 36 and 51 days, which gave him confidence to take up the 180-day penance. During the current fast, he also completed 115 fasting days and undertook a pilgrimage to Palitana.
Nipeksh Sheth, who began fast on March 24, now weighs 62kg. He is spending the final days of the penance at home and will perform ‘parna’, marking the end of the fast, at Pankaj Jain Sangh in Bhatta, Paldi, on Sunday.
