Ahmedabad: A 50-year-old visa consultant from Vejalpur filed a complaint on Thursday, alleging that a man cheated him and 18 clients of Rs 12.1 lakh by promising Finnish work permits and jobs paying up to 3,200 euros per month.
On Feb 25, 2026, he visited the firm’s office to enquire about Finnish work permits and met an agent, who claimed to handle the company’s Finland-related process. The agent allegedly offered to arrange work permits for Rs 7.5 lakh per applicant, including Rs 55,000 up front for registration, a flight ticket to Delhi, and one night’s hotel stay. He said he would deduct the remaining Rs 7 lakh from the applicant’s salary once the latter was in Finland and also promised a Rs 40,000 refund. Between March and April, the consultant collected registration payments from the applicants and transferred Rs 9.08 lakh to the agent’s bank account through RTGS. The consultant also transferred another Rs 3.01 lakh through UPI to an account linked to another person. The total payment made was Rs 12,10,300. The agent allegedly sent the consultant a flight ticket to Delhi on April 6 and introduced him to a person at a visa application centre.
They also signed an agreement concerning work permits, but it did not mention any address. Verification revealed that the tickets and documents were fake. The consultant had met a travel business owner at a commercial complex on Ashram Road while handling visa-related work, according to the complaint filed at Navrangpura police station. The consultant said that the agent shared an identity document and a visiting card of an overseas consultancy firm showing an office address in Mumbai. The consultant said repeated attempts to contact the agent and recover the money failed.
Later, the agent allegedly emailed receipts, migration letters, embassy appointment schedules, and Finnish residence visa documents, asking the consultant to visit Delhi again in June. The address on the identity document the agent provided was also allegedly false. He then approached police, alleging cheating and the use of forged documents. Download the TOI App.
