Water only needs to be added before the pothole is filled, after which the road can be reopened in approximately two hours,” Vakil said. AMC officials said the technology could offer a more durable alternative to the use of cold or hot mixes on concrete roads, which often serve as temporary repairs. Vakil said the technology had already been used on major roads in cities such as Mumbai, including the Eastern and Western Express Highways.
Ahmedabad: A pothole on a concrete road can often mean days of barricades, diversions and traffic snarls. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is now betting on a technology that could cut that disruption to just two hours. The civic body has begun using geopolymer technology to repair damaged concrete roads, allowing vehicles to return to the repaired stretch soon after the work is completed. Unlike conventional repairs, the entire concrete panel need not be broken and removed. Only the damaged portion can be repaired, depending on the extent of the damage. This could also reduce the time and material involved in fixing potholes and localised road damage. “Geopolymer technology uses clinker-free materials, reducing the carbon footprint. The material is activated using industrial by-products and specialised mineral-based binders. The technology is primarily intended for concrete roads, though it can also be used on certain bituminous road stretches where conditions are suitable. Another advantage was that it does not require conventional water curing after the repair. This eliminates the need for several days of curing, along with the water, labour and supervision required for the process. Repairs can also be undertaken under suitable conditions during the monsoon. AMC will maintain a two-year Defect Liability Period (DLP) for the work, during which defects arising from the repair will have to be rectified as per prescribed conditions.
