Ahmedabad: Nov in Gujarat usually brings a welcoming morning nip in the air. This year, however, sweater season is officially on hold as an enduring El Nino threat pushes winter out of the picture.
An unseasonable heat streak is set to dominate the state for the coming months, warn the latest long-range forecast released by India Meteorological Department (IMD). If Oct felt unusually sweltering, don’t look to Nov for relief.

In Ahmedabad, Saturday brought a mixed bag: though daytime and nighttime temperatures have dipped over the past 2-3 days across the region, the day was cooler at 32.6°C — 2.3°C below normal — while nights stubbornly refused to follow suit, clinging to 22.7°C — nearly 4 degrees higher than expected for this time of year. Rajkot in Saurashtra region baked as Gujarat’s hotspot on Saturday at 37.9°C, while Naliya in Kutch offered the state’s coolest night, dropping to 18.6°C. Nighttime won’t offer much relief either. Except for a few resilient pockets in Kutch, daytime temperatures across Gujarat are expected to hover significantly above normal. Minimum temperatures in Saurashtra and Kutch are slated to stay well above average, leaving evenings noticeably balmy. The culprit: very strong El Nino conditions currently prevailing over the equatorial Pacific Ocean. The latest Monsoon Mission Coupled Forecast System (MMCFS) and others predict these strong El Niño dynamics will persist right through Nov and Dec, the IMD forecast states. The shift is already tangible on the ground. IMD projects daytime mercury levels across Gujarat to climb again starting Monday While temperatures might temporarily plateau over the weekend. Across the state, the thermal contrast is already sharp. For now, Gujaratis will have to wait a little longer for that signature winter crispness as summer, it seems, is in no rush to leave.
