14-year-old Jensi Kanabar in action
Ahmedabad: Fourteen-year-old Jensi Kanabar won the J200 Astana Open in Kazakhstan on Saturday, defeating 15-year-old Natsuki Irokawa 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 in a 2-hour 59-minute final. It is set to lift her 32 places to No. 70 in the world junior U-18 rankings and secure her a main-draw place at the four junior Grand Slams in 2027. The sixth-seeded Junagadh player defeated ninth seed Sakino Miyazawa 6-3, 6-3 in the semi-final after beating South Korea’s fourth-seeded Yeri Hong 6-4, 6-1 in the quarter-final. After receiving a first-round bye, Kanabar had eased past Moldova’s Iana Semichina 6-3, 6-0 in the second round and overcome Latvia’s Keisija Berzina 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 in the next round.

Reflecting on the result, Jensi said, “Irokawa trapped me with angled shots in the second set, but I and my team devised a response for the decider. Her father, Dipak Kanabar, said, “Irokawa had countered Jensi’s usual wide baseline angles by playing short angled shots. Jensi responded in the third set by hitting deeper shots to neutralise the Japanese player’s game.”
