GSECL, NPCIL sign MoU to develop nuclear power project

Gandhinagar: State power generation utility, Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Ltd (GSECL), has signed an MoU with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) for developing a nuclear power project of around 4,000MW at Dhuvaran in Anand district.

The project is expected to entail a potential investment of around Rs 1 lakh crore and marks GSECL’s first foray into nuclear power generation. An official statement said the proposed nuclear project will operate under the Shanti Act, 2025, whose rules were notified on Aug 14. The legislation provides for licensing of nuclear power plants, fuel production and handling of nuclear material by entities authorised by the central govt, including govt departments, companies and joint ventures.

The MoU was signed in Mumbai on Thursday in the presence of energy minister Rishikesh Patel, energy and petrochemicals department additional chief secretary and GSECL chairman Ashwani Kumar, and NPCIL chairman and managing director V Rajesh.
