Gujarat plans Rs 100cr marine biotech corridor in Porbandar: The wider industry impact

Gandhinagar : Gujarat govt has proposed a Rs 100 crore Marine Biotechnology Research and Innovation Corridor (M-BRIC) at Mocha village in Porbandar district to harness the state’s marine biological resources for high-value products and strengthen the blue bioeconomy.

The Gujarat State Biotechnology Mission (GSBTM) and the CSIR-Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSIR-CSMCRI) are set to sign an MoU in Bhavnagar on Friday for the development of the corridor.

The Mocha campus will span 30 acres, with 10 acres designated for a research campus and the remaining 20 acres for an industrial ecosystem. The project will focus on marine resources such as seaweed, microalgae, marine microorganisms and saline ecosystems to develop products including biofertilizers, biostimulants, nutraceuticals, cosmeceuticals, aquafeed, animal nutrition products, enzymes, biosurfactants, pharmaceutical intermediates and marine-derived biomaterials. The research zone will house facilities for scientific research, innovation, training and marine operations, while the industrial area will support pilot-scale processing, manufacturing, warehousing, logistics, quality-control infrastructure and common utilities.
