Ahmedabad: A 77-year-old retired Bank of India employee lost Rs 5.4 lakh after fraudsters posing as bank officials tricked him into installing malicious applications on his mobile phone under the pretext of updating his digital life certificate for pensioners.

He was visiting Ayodhya on Oct 16 when he came across a Facebook ad claiming to offer a service to generate or update digital life certificates for Bank of India pensioners, according to the complaint. His grandson lodged an online cybercrime complaint the same day, followed by a complaint at Cybercrime police station on Oct 19. The victim, a resident of Saraspur, filed a complaint with Cybercrime police. Believing it to be genuine, he clicked the link and submitted his details. The retiree immediately contacted the bank and got his account closed. A subsequent complaint through the cybercrime helpline led to the registration of an e-FIR.
