Ahmedabad: The trust deficit created by the 2020 Galwan clash may persist for years, but India-China ties are moving towards transactional normalisation as economic dependence has pushed both countries to engage with each other, author Shastri Ramachandran said in Ahmedabad on Saturday.
“Trust is not going to be revived for a long time,” Ramachandran said while discussing his book “Chindia: Journey to an Asian Century” with senior corporate adviser and CERC chairman, Sunil Parekh, at Ahmedabad Management Association (AMA) . Ramachandran said trade had continued to grow through the Covid pandemic and after Galwan despite political tensions, while diplomatic visits, flights, student movement and people-to-people contacts indicated that “all the forms of normalisation are in place”. He said, “There had been a “doctrinal shift” in how India and China manage the border and approach the boundary dispute, while recent engagement between PM Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping showed a shift in warmth as well as in perception. During the discussion, Parekh said that India and China needed to know each other better since greater familiarity could help build trust and confidence despite strategic differences.
“But both countries now recognise their dependence on each other and the need to do business. There can be integrity in a transactional relationship. Ramachandran also argued that India should consider Chinese capital for manufacturing in India, with production aimed at exports, while pursuing available opportunities to expand bilateral trade.
