Gandhinagar : Pharma major Zydus Lifesciences has formally proposed setting up a private university near Ahmedabad with an estimated investment of around Rs 1,000 crore, with a focus on higher education and research in life sciences.
The proposed Zydus Lifesciences University is envisaged as an international institution aimed at attracting students and research talent from across the world, according to top govt sources. It will come up on the outskirts of Ahmedabad, and have a full-fledged campus with residential facilities for students, professors and researchers,” a govt source close to the development, said. “The state govt will be required to pass an amendment bill in the assembly to sanction the new institution,” a senior state govt official said. State govt sources said the proposed university will add to Gujarat’s growing higher education and research ecosystem and could bring together academic programmes, advanced research and industry-linked learning in life sciences.
“The proposed private university will focus on both academics and research activity. The proposal will, however, have to go through the prescribed regulatory process. Under Gujarat Private Universities Act, setting up a private university requires approvals at both the state and Union govt levels.
