Chennai: Residents of Nanganallur can breathe a sigh of relief as Greater Chennai Corporation has allocated 29.57 crore to acquire land for a direct link road from Nanganallur Fifth Main Road to the Pazhavanthangal subway to ease traffic congestion and reduce accidents in the area.
Nanganallur senior citizen association president V Ramarao said residents had approached multiple departments over the years but were told the project was not feasible or that funds were unavailable. “Once the road is built, residents and school children who use this stretch daily will benefit,” he said. Unlike other subways, vehicles exiting this one take a mandatory left turn. At the junction near Vembuli Amman Koil Street, motorists were seen illegally driving on a one-way road to reach College Road. School children were also seen using the route.
When TOI visited the subway on Friday, the stretch was congested.
