Chennai: A 34-year-old woman, who was set ablaze on Sept 19 by a man in Washermenpet after she stopped speaking to him, succumbed to burns at Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital on Saturday.
Police arrested M Babulal, 40, on Sept 19, a day after the attack, and remanded him in judicial custody. On Sept 18, Babulal confronted Mohana, poured petrol on her and set her ablaze, police said.
Police said Mohana and Babulal had been in a relationship for the past few years. The deceased was identified as M Mohana of Srinivasapuram First Street in Washermenpet. However, Mohana stopped speaking to him about three months ago, leading to frequent disputes between them.
She suffered severe burns and was rushed to the Kilpauk hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries on Saturday night.
Washermenpet police, who had initially booked Babulal for attempted murder, altered the case to murder following Mohana’s death. Further investigation is underway.
