Police said P Ramamurthy, 54, was driving the bus, 109 A, from Island Grounds to Thiruvidanthai. As the bus approached the high court around 11.30am, the driver lost control and ploughed it into a row of cars parked along the road, damaging nine vehicles. The driver claimed the bus brakes had failed, but the police registered a case and booked him for rash driving. No one was injured. The bus mounted the median and came to a halt. They called for a detailed investigation and urged the police to establish whether the crash was accidental or intentional and to ensure compensation for the damaged vehicles. Traffic movement on NSC Bose Road was disrupted for nearly an hour as police cleared the damaged vehicles and removed the bus from the median.

Chennai: An MTC bus went out of control and rammed nine parked cars before mounting the median on NSC Bose Road near Madras High Court on Tuesday morning, causing panic and disrupting traffic for nearly an hour.

A group of advocates gathered at the spot and said they are forced to park vehicles along the roadside due to a lack of adequate parking space.

During questioning, Ramamurthy told police that the brakes failed and he deliberately steered the bus towards the median to bring it to a halt. Flower Bazaar traffic Investigation wing rushed to the spot and detained Ramamurthy. A medical examination ruled out drunk driving. The accident has revived demands for a multi-level parking facility near the high court.
