Chennai: Three school students are among four arrested on Tuesday in connection with the murder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) functionary Kannan in Besant Nagar on Sept 5. The five people arrested earlier were remanded in judicial custody till Sept 21 by a Saidapet court. With this, nine people have been arrested so far.
Shastri Nagar police initially arrested Bharani, 20, of Rukmani Nagar in Adyar, with his friends Rakesh, Naresh, Hariharan and Manikandan. They were produced before the Saidapet court and remanded in judicial custody till Sept 21. Police said Bharani’s grandfather, Siva, was murdered in 2009 and his father, Velu, was killed in 2016.
Police said the three school students were friends of the prime suspect, Bharani , and helped in executing the murder. Investigators said Bharani believed Kannan was responsible for the deaths and planned the attack with his friends. Police are examining their roles and the case background to identify other persons involved. The arrested juveniles were produced before Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) and later admitted to the correctional facility for boys in Kellys. During the investigation, police found that the murder was linked to a long-standing family feud .
