Granite baron R Veeramani who was arrested in relation to a Pocso
Veeramani was arrested by the anti-vice squad (AVS) on Aug 29 along with his associates in a child rape case. The second Pocso case was registered against him later, based on a complaint by the mother of another survivor, who accused him of sexually assaulting her daughter in 2024. Her mother told police that Veeramani invited the girl to his guest house on the pretext of giving her a Diwali gift in 2004. Police said an associate of Veeramani, who was arrested in the ongoing case, visited the mortuary and gave the mother ₹30,000 for the funeral, and arranged for the cremation at Krishnampet crematorium. She told police that Veeramani later offered ₹1.5 lakh towards her niece’s wedding. During the inquiry, the team found that the original suicide case records at Ice House police station had been destroyed when the station got gutted in 2017.
The complainant said that the Class XI student had received financial assistance from Veeramani for her education at a school in Teynampet. After returning home, the girl remained withdrawn and later died by suicide by hanging at her house in Ice House. Her body was sent to Government Royapettah Hospital for postmortem and handed over to her parents. The mother approached Chennai police commissioner A Amalraj last week after learning about Veeramani’s arrest. Her complaint was forwarded to the SIT.
The special investigation team (SIT) probing the cases against him registered it on a complaint by a woman whose Class XI daughter died by suicide in 2004. Chennai: Yet another child rape case has been registered against the granite baron, R Veeramani, taking the total number of cases registered against him to three. SIT obtained details of the case from the assistant commissioner’s office and the court concerned and continued the investigation.
