COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation plans to introduce biweekly e-waste collection drives in all 100 wards by partnering with a private recycling company. The move follows a month-long collection campaign conducted between Oct 2 and 31 under the Centre’s Special Campaign 6.0, during which the corporation collected 21,467kg (21.46 tonnes) of e-waste from its five zones. Green Era Recyclers, which contributed to the collection and processing initiative, received a certificate of appreciation from corporation commissioner Katta Ravi Teja on Oct 31.
The commissioner said the proposed drives would provide residents with a regular channel to dispose of obsolete electronic goods, including computers, mobile phones and household appliances, instead of mixing them with regular garbage or allowing them to enter informal recycling channels. The civic body is in the process of signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with an authorised e-waste processing firm to ensure scientific disposal and recycling of discarded electronic appliances. Dedicated collection points were established to encourage residents to hand over discarded electronic and electrical equipment separately. The corporation organised awareness rallies, camps, exhibitions, kolam competitions and two-wheeler rallies involving school students, self-help groups and residents.
He said, “The initiative is expected to strengthen the city’s waste segregation system under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, which came into force on April 1. The same company that processed during the pilot collection will continue once the MoU is signed. Since the generation of e-waste in the city has been ascertained, it will be regulated into biweekly or, if possible, every alternate day. ” You Can Also Check: Gold Rate in Chennai | Silver Rate in Chennai | Bank Holidays in Chennai | Public Holidays in Chennai | Chennai AQI | Weather in Chennai | Petrol Price in Chennai | Diesel Price in Chennai | CNG Price in Chennai | LPG Price in Chennai Stay updated with the latest Chennai news.
