“I was rolling on the ground, crying for help,” he recalled. Eventually, he was told that portions of his left hand had to be amputated to save his life. “I wanted to remember the pain and what this habit had done to me,” he said. “My wife also left me,” he said.
Three years ago, Sasi Kumar’s made a living by playing drums at neighbourhood events in Kodungaiyur. His nimble hands also helped him run a profitable roadside shop. Years of abusing prescription tablets changed his life irreversibly. “It gave me pleasure. I felt I could conquer the world. Nothing else mattered,” Sasi recalled. Even the death of a friend from a drug overdose was not enough to make him quit. Then came the day that changed everything. Sasi was alone in a vacant plot when he injected the drug solution into a vein. Within moments, he realised something was terribly wrong. His fingers stopped moving, and numbness spread through his arm. His mother rushed him to a nearby hospital. Doctors found that the damage was severe. Sasi survived, but the tasks he once did without a second thought now require his mother’s help. For nearly a year after losing portions of his arms, Sasi struggled to face people.
