CHENNAI: A revenue inspector was arrested by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on charges of demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a man in connection with the eviction of an encroachment from temple land in Namakkal district on Thursday.
On Sept 10, a team comprising the tahsildar, deputy tahsildar, revenue inspector, village administrative officer and police personnel visited the site and began the eviction proceedings. As the work could not be completed that day, it was postponed to Sept 22 to make arrangements for adequate police protection. During the trap, Jayaraman allegedly demanded and accepted Rs 10,000 from the complainant.
He was arrested and remanded in judicial custody.
He petitioned the revenue authorities in 2023 seeking the removal of an alleged encroachment on temple land by Arumugam, whose property is adjacent to the temple. The court directed the Sendhamangalam tahsildar to remove the encroachment within 12 weeks, from June 10 to Sept 10, 2026.
The complainant, Chandrasekaran of Alanganatham village in Sendhamangalam taluk, is a family member of the Dharmakarthas of Periyasamy Temple in the village, according to DVAC. As no action was taken, Chandrasekaran approached the Madras high court.
