Tamil Nadu police are getting ‘anti-drone guns’ to disrupt communication and navigation systems

MADURAI: Tamil Nadu police are getting ‘anti-drone guns’ to disrupt communication and navigation systems of unauthorised unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Chennai Air Customs last year seized more than 200 illegally imported Chinese-made drones worth more than ₹2 crore. The intelligence wing’s security branch CID floated a tender on Oct 14 for the equipment that costs ₹1.52 crore. The system can neutralise a target within 10 seconds, the officer said. The guns will have a jamming cone of at least 30 degrees, and identify up to 10 drones simultaneously, according to tender specifications. The govt floated a ₹1.86-crore tender in Nov 2025 to buy portable drone jammers, but it was dropped.

The guns can jam targets within 1km,” said a senior police officer. The move comes days after an unidentified drone was found on the Coimbatore airport premises during chief minister C Joseph Vijay’s visit. Six gun-and-detector systems will be procured for security duties. The handheld equipment can be transported for deployment during visits by Prime Minister, President and other VIPs. “The detectors will be capable of identifying drones within a 3km radius. Once a drone is detected, the operator can activate the gun to disrupt radio signals linking it to its controller and interfere with the satellite navigation. Depending on its fail-safe settings, a drone whose signals are disrupted may descend or crash, hover in place or return to its launch point. Tamil Nadu joins Maharashtra, Kerala and Karnataka in procuring anti-drone equipment to identify threats during VIP movements and public events. Unlike that tender that sought to buy jammers designed to disrupt drone signals across designated areas, the latest tender seeks detector-equipped guns capable of identifying approaching drones and directing jamming signals.
