Chennai: After years of delay and repeated renovation attempts, the restored 137-year-old Victoria Hall is set to reopen early this week, with chief minister M K Stalin slated to inaugurate the landmark on EVR Periyar Salai near Moore Market. Once opened, the historic town hall is expected to reclaim its place as a vibrant public space, hosting evening musical performances and speeches by leading orators. A professional agency will manage the facility.

These installations depict Chennai’s transport history and will double up as selfie points, an official said. In the run-up to the inauguration, officials of Greater Chennai Corporation have been working round the clock to complete last-minute tasks. The forecourt now features replicas of cycle rickshaws, trams, and boats, reflecting the transport modes once common in the city.

Earlier reporting noted: The Victoria Hall (BE 1885) in Chennai will hold The Formal Opening in a matter of days. An upper deck providing panoramic city views has also been readied, though public access will be restricted for now due to safety concerns.

Officials said the first floor houses a fully upgraded performance hall designed for contemporary use, with new interiors, lighting, and acoustics, as well as a lounge. Plans are afoot to install a telescope at a later stage,” said a GCC official. The interiors open into a brightly lit space with polished flooring, where plaques, photographs, and posters trace the evolution of Victoria Hall. Political pamphlets of the Justice Party, along with panels detailing key political events held at the venue, form part of the display. “A mezzanine level offers balcony seating with views of the stage. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin shall formally present the building back to the city. This significant event will continue the process of our conserving Chennai’s historic architectural heritage.
