New Delhi: Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has sought an action-taken report from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) over allegations of sexual harassment reportedly raised by some female students against a professor.
The commission took suo motu cognisance of a video circulating on social media in which the students alleged that they had submitted a complaint against the professor to the JNU vice-chancellor in May 2026, but no appropriate action was taken. Because of administrative inaction or delay, she said the commission’s objective was to ensure that every complaint was examined and that complainants were not denied access to justice. DCW said it was not treating the allegations as established facts and had sought a report from the university to ascertain the status of the matter. If the complaint was referred to the ICC, the commission said it wanted details of the action taken by the committee and the present status of the inquiry. DCW chairperson Lata Gupta said the complaints of sexual harassment raised by the students must be dealt with fairly, promptly and sensitively. The commission said it would examine JNU’s report and take further necessary action based on the facts and findings available on record.
The students alleged that the university administration attempted to protect the professor, instead of acting on their complaint. In a notice issued to the vice-chancellor, the commission sought details of the action taken on the complaint and whether it had been referred to the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act. The commission has also sought the action-taken report along with relevant details. In case no action has been taken, JNU has been asked to state the reasons for the delay.
