New Delhi : Delhi forest and wildlife department has advised religious institutions and event organisers to use mechanised or robotic elephants during ceremonies instead of live captive elephants.
“It is noticed that live captive elephants are sometimes brought from different regions for religious and cultural events under the provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. However, public safety concerns, animal welfare, and logistical challenges associated with the use of live elephants in crowded urban settings like Delhi cannot be overstated,” states the advisory issued by the forest and wildlife department dated Sept 3.
