Delhi govt’s planned 2.2-km elevated corridor along Shivaji Marg: The wider industry impact

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

New Delhi: Delhi govt’s planned 2.2-km elevated corridor along Shivaji Marg (Najafgarh Road), connecting Zakhira crossing with Karampura flyover, is moving towards implementation.

Sources said that while the department has not announced a date for starting construction or a completion deadline, the project could move into the execution stage in 2027 if the tendering and approval process proceeds as planned. The four-lane elevated corridor will provide a signal-free connection between Zakhira flyover on Rohtak Road and Karampura flyover on Patel Road. The actual start will depend on the time taken to award the contract and complete the required formalities.

Because of roadside parking, market traffic and industrial establishments, the project is aimed at easing congestion along one of the busy stretches of Najafgarh Road, where commuters encounter multiple traffic signals, a rotary and bottlenecks.

This is expected to reduce travel time for commuters and improve traffic movement on the adjoining roads, he said. This will be followed by finalising construction plans, completing necessary pre-construction formalities and mobilising resources at the site, said the official. He said: “Once operational, the elevated corridor is expected to provide an alternative route for commuters travelling between West and Central Delhi without having to negotiate the busy intersections along this stretch. Officials said the department would also submit the project to traffic and UTTIPEC as the construction is likely to require traffic management arrangements along the existing road to ensure that movement is not severely disrupted during the work. PWD will also have to coordinate with relevant agencies before starting construction, particularly over utilities and other road-related infrastructure along the stretch, they said.

Once completed, it is expected to improve connectivity between west Delhi areas such as Janakpuri and Uttam Nagar and central and New Delhi. The elevated stretch is also expected to reduce the traffic load on the nearby Punjabi Bagh intersection. The corridor will allow vehicles travelling between the two existing flyovers to bypass traffic signals and junctions at the ground level. The project has been under consideration for some time. The department has now finalised the blueprint, paving the way for tenders. After inviting tenders, PWD will evaluate bids, select a construction agency and award the work. Download the TOI App.

PWD had earlier initiated feasibility-related work and appointed a consultant to prepare a detailed project report (DPR).
