After assessing witness statements, defence witnesses and other material placed before it, ICC said the incidents should not be viewed in isolation and the evidence indicated a recurring pattern of inappropriate personal interactions, sexually suggestive conduct and unwelcome physical contact. Police said JNU forwarded the details to the Vasant Kunj North station house officer for necessary legal action. Dismissing the allegations, Akoijam posted on X on Oct 11 that JNU had “lied” that he did not produce any witness. Calling the allegations against him a “politically motivated complaint”, he said if a legitimate institution had been turned into a “khap panchayat”, discarding the law, norms and rules and regulations, no truth or legitimate conclusion could be arrived at.
Jawaharlal Nehru University has dismissed Akoijam after its internal committee (IC) examined allegations made by several students against the MP, who was then a professor at JNU. The committee also observed that the conduct had created an intimidating, offensive and hostile learning environment for women students, with inadequate professional boundaries in interactions. The documents included the dismissal order, ICCs inquiry report, and its detailed assessment and observations. Download the TOI App.
