New Delhi: A 33-year-old contractual worker died after allegedly being electrocuted inside Delhi University’s South Campus Monday, prompting police to register a case of death by negligence.
Police said a PCR call was received around 5.30 am on Sept 7 regarding the death of a man, a resident of a JJ Camp, who had allegedly suffered an electric shock on the campus.
“The deceased had been hired on a contractual basis as a gardener, but was being made to do the work of an electrician,” said a protester, Shubham. He was taken to Safdarjung Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Following the incident, family members and students staged a protest, alleging negligence on the part of university authorities.
A university official said representatives of the administration met the bereaved family and are considering providing employment to the next of kin or extending financial assistance. The protesters demanded compensation for the family and a permanent job for the victim’s wife. The university expressed grief over the employee’s death and extended condolences to the family.
A case has been registered under Sections 287 and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and further investigation is underway.
