INDIA bloc plans citywide campaign against electoral roll revision

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

New Delhi: A meeting of the Delhi unit of INDIA bloc constituents was held at the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) office on DDU Marg Friday, with functionaries deciding to intensify their campaign against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and expand the movement across the capital.

The meeting decided that all constituent parties would work together for the INDIA bloc rally scheduled for Nov 1. Citizens’ groups and people’s organisations will also hold protests across Delhi on Oct 23, followed by a week-long awareness campaign through posters, pamphlets and social media outreach.

The meeting “condemned the alleged crackdown on protesters and criticised the removal of Jantar Mantar from the list of designated protest sites, calling it an attack on democratic rights, according to a DPCC statement. DPCC general secretary Anil Bhardwaj said Aam Aadmi Party was not a part of the INDIA alliance. “Any decision on including another political party would be taken by the Congress leadership in consultation with existing INDIA bloc partners,” he said.

There was a consensus among parties to expand the ongoing movement—which calls for the removal of chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, cancellation of the SIR process, a return to paper ballot-based elections and the revocation of the immunity granted to election commissioners against criminal proceedings—to every street, neighbourhood and locality across Delhi in the coming days, stated the party. The bloc also plans to involve citizens whose names were allegedly removed from electoral rolls during the revision process.
