The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia has cancelled its Talimi Mela 2026, which was scheduled from Oct 29 to Nov 1 to mark its 106th Foundation Day, amid ongoing student protests and an indefinite hunger strike demanding the restoration of the university’s students’ union and elections.

In the email, Afzal said the university had been witnessing student unrest and protests since Oct 12. “In view of this, and keeping the safety and well-being of our students, guests and participants in mind, it has been decided with deep regret to cancel Talimi Mela 2026,” the email stated. Meanwhile, the Jamia law faculty students, in solidarity with the hunger strikers, Thursday took out a “Black coat” peaceful march on campus. The decision was communicated in an email by Neelofer Afzal, dean of students’ welfare, addressed to university colleagues, including deans, heads of departments, directors and principals. She added that, despite the administration’s efforts to resolve the impasse, the protesting students had not agreed to the proposed resolution and normalcy had not been restored on campus.
