New Delhi: A Delhi court Saturday took cognisance of the chargesheet filed by National Investigation Agency (NIA) in the Red Fort bomb blast case and fixed Sept 9 for compliance with the procedure for supplying the chargesheet and related documents to the accused.
The explosion killed at least 11 people, injured several others and damaged nearby vehicles and properties. The matter has now been listed on Sept 9 for compliance with the procedure requiring supply of the chargesheet and other relevant documents to the accused. NIA alleged that he was inside the explosives-laden vehicle when it exploded and had masterminded the attack with the help of a network of “radicalised individuals”, including doctors, facilitators and logistics providers. Several of those arrested were allegedly associated with Al-Falah University in Faridabad, where they either worked or taught. Investigators later identified Umar-un-Nabi, a doctor originally from Jammu & Kashmir, as the prime accused. Special public prosecutor Madhav Khurana and advocate Trisha Mittal appeared for the prosecution. Last month, the court allowed NIA to dispose of the mortal remains of the deceased victims and alleged suicide bomber Nabi with dignity and in accordance with their religious customs. NIA has so far filed two chargesheets, naming a total of 13 accused. Last month, NIA filed a supplementary chargesheet against three additional accused, taking the total number of accused in the case to 13. The blast took place on Nov 10 last year when a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device exploded near Lal Quila Metro Station amid slow-moving traffic.
The blast was the result of a conspiracy allegedly known as “Operation Heavenly Hind”, which was purportedly being planned since 2022, according to the agency. Special judge Prashant Sharma of Rouse Avenue Courts took cognisance of the case. A detailed order setting out the reasons for taking cognisance is yet to be passed. The agency registered the case a day after the explosion under provisions of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and Explosive Substances Act.
