New Delhi: Stressing that women’s safety was “non-negotiable”, lieutenant governor TS Sandhu Tuesday directed Delhi Police to create a dedicated ‘Pink Force’ of trained women personnel for high-visibility patrolling around schools, colleges, metro stations and other vulnerable locations across the capital.
The interaction with officers of the rank of ACP and above, attended by the police commissioner, was Sandhu’s second visit to police headquarters since June 24. He reviewed the impact of initiatives launched since then and identified areas requiring further action.
Addressing senior Delhi Police officers at the police headquarters auditorium on Jai Singh Road, Sandhu said the force should be modelled on Goa Police’s Pink Force and provide both deterrence and rapid response, particularly during vulnerable hours. “Every police station should be a place where citizens feel heard, helped and safe,” he said. He also called for the continuation of focused action against eve-teasing and harassment in public spaces under Operation Shishtachar. LG directed Delhi Police to strengthen foot and motorcycle patrolling in crime-prone and high-footfall areas, especially around schools, colleges, markets and transport hubs. On traffic management, Sandhu asked police to identify congestion hotspots, ensure visible deployment during peak hours and enhance real-time monitoring through CCTV cameras and Traffic Control Room. LG called for regular awareness programmes in schools on Protection of Children from Sexual Offences, child safety, cybercrime, substance abuse and road safety. Districts have been asked to appoint nodal officers and prepare quarterly outreach calendars. Police stations were also directed to organise sports activities for children in association with schools and RWAs. For police welfare, he sought fixed-hour grievance hearings at headquarters, timely promotions, particularly for lower ranks and women personnel, and development of police colonies as model zero-waste colonies. He also reiterated zero tolerance for corruption. LG commended Delhi Police and other security agencies for ensuring the smooth, secure and successful conduct of Brics Summit , saying the experience should further strengthen preparedness and coordination for future international events.
