New Delhi: MCD Wednesday intensified its crackdown on unauthorised, ongoing or recently constructed fifth-floors, days after the Satya Niketan building collapse.
In total, 52 such buildings identified in 12 zones and are being served notices. The building departments of all 12 zones have been directed to identify structures that violate height norms under the Unified Building Bye-Laws and MPD rules and serve notices to defaulters. On Wednesday, it carried out 46 demolition actions across all 12 zones. In addition, 20 properties were sealed, 24 show-cause notices issued and 31 demolition/sealing orders passed. In Najafgarh, enforcement action was taken against properties declared dangerous in Vikas Nagar and Sector 17, Dwarka. MCD also continued demolition work at building number 13 in Satya Niketan, next to the building that collapsed on Sept 6. The civic body has identified 1,243 buildings which operate as paying guest (PG) facilities. These house around 24,000 occupants.

Seven buildings with fifth floors under construction in violation of norms were identified in the Najafgarh zone alone and seven in Keshavpuram zone, according to MCD. A senior MCD official said demolition at these properties could begin after a prescribed notice period. Thereafter, a demolition order is issued and action can be taken after another two weeks,” the official said. “Enforcement (of rules) against such structures will be intensified,” an MCD official said. “The drive against unauthorised construction, misuse of properties and dangerous structures will be further intensified in the coming days,” officials said.
“Notices for unauthorised construction are first served, giving the owner a week to take corrective action. MCD commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar Tuesday stressed on instructions to act against the ongoing illegal construction, including unauthorised fifth-floor additions, following the chief minister’s direction. The civic body also continued its drive against dangerous and unauthorised structures. In Kucha Chelan, Jama Masjid, two roof panels at the ground-floor level and a partition wall were demolished with assistance from the Jama Masjid police station. Similar action was taken against an unauthorised construction at a property in Bazar Sitaram under the Sadar Paharganj zone. In Keshavpuram zone, demolition was carried out on a property in Rana Pratap Bagh, covering all floors. At another property in Model Town, three RCC slab panels were demolished and the reinforcement was cut using a gas cutter for violating building norms. Download the TOI App.
